On July 10, CFLC’s “Yixia Qinglin” summer social application team entered the fifth day of teaching the history of CPC and XMU at Xiamen Houpu Community Library. In the day’s class, the team introduced to the children the connotation, symbol and meaning of the new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics, as well as the great achievements that the nation had made, the spirit of “fighting poverty”, and knowledge related to COVID-19. The team’s interesting lessons inspired the young children’s enthusiasm for learning. In the Q&A session, the children asked questions one after another, and their neat and detailed notes demonstrated that the CFLC volunteer team’s lessons had delivered the expected effect.

On July 11, the last day of the lessons, the team lectured on XMU’s history and spirit. They first gave a brief introduction to XMU, then elaborated on XMU’s history from its foundation to the present in chronological order, followed by the stories of the great forefathers embodying XMU’s spirit. This lesson gave the children a better understanding of the founding and development of XMU, and they were deeply touched by the perseverance and resilience of generations of XMU faculty and teachers over the past century.

At the end of the lessons, the head of the Houpu Community Library expressed his appreciation to the CFLC team for their hard work. He said, “The children have learned a lot from the interesting interactive lessons. Even though some of the children were slow at the beginning, they became more and more active at the later stage and were able to express their ideas clearly. Thank you very much for your patient guidance and companionship.” The team was also impressed by the children’s performance.

The summer camp concludes

During the summer camp, the team also joined hands with Xiamen Houpu Community Library to launch a book donation campaign to promote public libraries and raise public awareness of the lives of children in urban villages. The role of books for students is self-evident, but many schools in urban villages have very few extracurricular books for students due to their geographical location and financial conditions. As a result, many community libraries have been built for students in urban villages in Xiamen. Reading promotes the development of students’ internal imaginations. Books are of value because they foster personality and social development. Children are very impressionable during the formative years, and reading can help them develop into caring, intelligent and friendly people. On July 13, the CFLC volunteer team launched a book donation drive on the campus of Xiamen University, collecting a total of 166 books which were then sent to Houpu Community Library.

CFLC’s “Yixia Qinglin” summer social application team has brought its “Party and University History” summer camp to fruition. By organizing this successful summer camp, they have developed their communicative and organizational skills and solidified their commitment to public welfare in their future careers.
