The sixth Cross-Strait Chinese-English Interpreting Competition was held in Taiwan’s National Changhua University of Education on April 2.

The contestants represented 20 Chinese and overseas institutions of higher education, including Beijing Foreign Studies University, Xiamen University, Wuhan University, Zhejiang University, Fu Jen Catholic University, National Taiwan Normal University, the University of Macau, and the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey.

In the three rounds of competition that last six hours, Liu Jing, a CFLC graduate student majoring in interpreting, stood out from the pack, grabbing the first prize, and her classmate, Wen Yanjuan, claimed the second prize. Their winning of the top prizes added to the festivities of XMU’s 95^th anniversary.

The qualifying matches for this year’s contest had started in September last year with more than 2,000 entrants from 210 institutions around the world. In the ensuing six months, regional finals were held in the mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao.

The CFLC contestants had been coached by Prof. Chen Jing and Dr. Su Wei.

Over the two days before the contest, CFLC officers observing the competition visited various Taiwan universities, including the Chinese Culture University, Fu Jen Catholic University, Tamkang University, National Chengchi University, and National Changhua University of Education. They met with their Taiwan counterparts to discuss plans for the second Cross-Strait Chinese-Japanese Interpreting Contest and the first Chinese-Russian Interpreting Contest.
