CFLC students staged three fascinating dramas in foreign languages on the night of June 10 at the University’s Science and Art Center to a packed audience. The performances were jointly organized by CFLC, the Office of Academic Affairs, and the Graduate School.

The Japanese drama “Maxburger’s Ambition”, a biting satire on opportunism and a reminder of the value of solidarity and mutual help, tells the hilarious story of a lousy thief in a knock-off burger restaurant. Seven Japanese majors with three months of rehearsal presented an entertaining performance that won thunderous applause from the audience.

The Russian drama “The Government Inspector”, by Nikolai Gogol, hinges on a case of mistaken identity, when a lowly impoverished young civil servant is mistaken by the members of a small provincial town for a high-ranking government inspector. The drama ridicules the extensive bureaucracy of the Russian government under the tsar as a thoroughly corrupt system. The complicated play, skillfully enacted by CFLC students, evoked a wonderful response from the audience.

CFLC German majors also paid tribute to the great playwright Heinrich von Kleist by presenting onstage his masterpiece “The Broken Jug” that mocks the failings of human nature. Glamorous costumes, delicate plot setting, cleverly-penned dialogues, and intense emotional conflicts captivated the audience.

The three theatric productions mark the commencement of the first “Dramatic CFLC” play series. They not only showcased students’ theatric talent, but also inspired their enthusiasm for the learning of foreign languages and enriched their campus life.
