Zhang Longhai

Prof. ZHANG Longhai is Dean of the College of Foreign Languages and Cultures (CFLC) at Xiamen University, the doctoral supervisor of “Studies on Ethnic American Literature”, a member of the China National Committee for Translation and Interpreting Education, and a guest professor at Beijing Foreign Studies University and Guizhou Normal University.

 

Prof. Zhang obtained his PhD in 1999 and completed his postdoctoral research at Yale University in 2001/02. He was also Chairperson of the CFLC Staff Union from 2003 to 2009 and Deputy Secretary of the CFLC Party Branch from 2004 to 2008.

 

In 2006, he was selected by the Ministry of Education as a member of the “New-Century Support Program for Distinguished Professionals” in 2006. In August 2007, he won fast-track promotion to full professorship by virtue of his outstanding track record of scholarship.

 

From October 2007 to November 2009, Prof. Zhang served full-time as Director of the Office of Political and Educational Affairs at the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Mumbai, India, with the diplomatic rank of Second Secretary.

 

Prof. Zhang is currently a standing committee member of the National Society of American Literary Studies and Deputy President of the Fujian Association of Foreign Languages and Literatures.

 

Prof. Zhang specializes in American literary studies. His research interests include Chinese American literature, Harold Bloom studies, India’s politics and economy, and Indian English literature. He has published more than fifty articles on American literature at home and abroad both in English and Chinese. He is the author of three monographs ? Identity and History: Reading Chinese American Literature (2004), Inside Chinese American Literature (2012), and Harold Bloom and Literature (2012). Prof. Zhang translated Fifth Chinese Daughter and Another City, Not My Own into Chinese in 2000 and 2003, respectively.

 

In recent years, Prof. Zhang has obtained eight research projects at the national, provincial and ministerial levels, with grants totaling RMB 575,000. One of his national projects sponsored by the National Bureau for Social Sciences ? Harold Bloom and Literature ? was completed in September 2008 and subsequently earned an “excellent” rating.

 

Prof. Zhang was the recipient of the honorary title of “Fujian Provincial Outstanding Individual for University Student Social Practice” in 2011, the “Third Prize of the Seventh Xiamen Awards for Research Excellence in Social Sciences” in 2007, and the “Third Prize of the Fujian Awards for Research Excellence in Social Sciences” and the “XMU China Construction Bank Award for Teaching Excellence” in 2005. He twice won recognition for exemplary service for the XMU Staff Union (in 2003 and 2004) and was thrice honored as an “Outstanding XMU Communist Party Member” (in 1998, 2001, and 2012).
