A Hundred-Year History

The College of Foreign Languages and Cultures (CFLC) at Xiamen University (XMU) has its roots in the University’s original Department of Foreign Languages, which was established in 1923 as one of the University’s first academic departments. Over the past century, after weathering the storms of war, the founding of New China, and through the era of reform and opening up, CFLC continues to forge ahead while remaining true to its original aspirations.

For a hundred years, generations of foreign language scholars have continued to strive, nurturing talents for Party and Country, and fostering excellence in many outstanding individuals. Since its inception, CFLC has gathered renowned scholars to educate brilliant minds. Countless bright foreign language educators strive to fulfill their duties, educating students with sincerity, and using their noble character to inspire young learners. With lifelong dedication, they sow the seeds of knowledge for thousands of students, providing earnest teachings and caring support to cast lifelong mentorships.

As the tides of time surge ceaselessly, CFLC works diligently to keep pace. We have made remarkable achievements in developing academic disciplines, faculty strength, academic research, talent cultivation, social services, international exchanges, and more. Cohorts of foreign language students, upholding the school motto of "Pursue Excellence, Strive for Perfection", possessing idealistic beliefs and professional competence. After studying on our beautiful campus, they tell the story of China and strive towards the prosperity of the country and the rejuvenation of the nation.

Standing at the beginning of a new century, and a new journey, CFLC will continue to uphold its original mission of education and nurturing, anchored in the goal of fostering virtue, and a commitment to cultivating more top-tier talents.
