XMU Commemorates 100 Years of Foreign Language Discipline

In a grand celebration, Xiamen University honored the centennial anniversary of its foreign language discipline. On April 8, distinguished guests, including XMU President Zhang Zongyi, alumni, and stakeholders, gathered at the Science and Art Center on the Siming campus. The event marked the beginning of a new chapter in the discipline’s history. The conference was livestreamed on various platforms.


President Zhang Zongyi delivered a congratulatory speech, recognizing the discipline’s rich heritage and its contributions to foreign language education in China. He emphasized the discipline’s commitment to excellence and urged it to continue its pursuit of academic integrity and innovation.


Esteemed guests, such as He Lianzhen, Vice President of Zhejiang University, and Liu Hong, President of Dalian University of Foreign Studies, also delivered speeches, praising the discipline’s significant role in national development and international exchanges. They expressed their hopes for deeper collaboration and the cultivation of high-quality foreign language professionals.


The conference witnessed the establishment of the Xiamen University Center for Civilizational Exchange and Mutual Learning, aiming to promote cultural respect and facilitate the creative transformation of Chinese civilization.


The launch of the “Together Building Dreams” Employment Alliance was another highlight of the event. The alliance, initiated by the alumni association, aims to provide high-quality employment opportunities for foreign language students.


CFLC Dean Chen Jing presented a comprehensive report on the discipline’s century-long journey, highlighting its achievements and outlining future goals.


The conference concluded with heartfelt tributes to retired faculty members and student representatives, symbolizing gratitude and admiration for their contributions.
