CFLC Student Zheng Zelin Clinches National Translation Championship

Xiamen University student Zheng Zelin has emerged as the champion in the “English-Chinese General” category at the national finals of the 2023 China Written Translation Contest. The competition, held at Shanghai International Studies University, featured rigorous preliminary, semifinal, and final rounds. Zheng, a CFLC graduate student specializing in English Translation, showcased exceptional professional skills and translation abilities to secure the championship title.


The “English-Chinese General” category, known for its high participation and intense competition, was judged by Chen Mingming, former Director of the Translation Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Executive Vice President of the Translators Association of China, and Dr. He Yong, former Head of the Chinese Language Unit at the United Nations Language Services and recipient of the United Nations 21st Century Award. Zheng’s victory not only highlights his solid competence and exemplary spirit but also underscores the exceptional teaching and practical training at Xiamen University.


The China Written Translation Contest, jointly organized by the Investment and Technology Promotion Office (ITPO) of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization and Beijing Chema Translation Co., Ltd., is a prestigious event renowned for its innovative format, diverse content, and rigorous judging. Participants include students from universities across the country, as well as translation professionals and enthusiasts from government agencies, businesses, and freelance backgrounds, representing various nations.


Spanning nearly six months, the contest encompassed preliminary, semifinal, and final rounds. The “English-Chinese General” category covered a broad range of topics, demanding participants to possess extensive knowledge and depth of understanding. Zheng’s victory in the English-to-Chinese and Chinese-to-English translation finals, which explored the impact of AI on human work, reflects his composed demeanor, agility, and precise writing style. Outshining participants from esteemed institutions such as Monterey Institute of International Studies, Shanghai International Studies University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, and Fudan University, Zheng’s achievement brings honor to CFLC and exemplifies its commitment to practical teaching platforms, scientific and technological innovation competitions, and talent development.
